INTERFAITH RELATIONS & PEACEBUILDING
Building understanding, peaceful coexistence and responsible community relations across Nigeria.
Our Commitment
OMPALAN recognises that peaceful communities require respect for people of different faiths, traditions and convictions. In Nigeriaโs diverse oil- and solid-mineral-producing areas, constructive relations among religious communities are an important part of peace, security, social stability and sustainable development.
We therefore support respectful interfaith engagement based on dialogue, mutual understanding, human dignity, freedom of conscience, peaceful coexistence and respect for the law.
Why Interfaith Relations Matter
- They create channels for dialogue when communities face tension or disagreement.
- They encourage cooperation on shared community concerns, including peace, security, education, health and development.
- They help reduce misunderstanding and strengthen trust among neighbours and community institutions.
- They provide opportunities for religious and traditional leaders to support peaceful conflict prevention and resolution.
- They reinforce the principle that differences in belief need not prevent communities from working together for the common good.
Our Interfaith Principles
Respect
Respect for the dignity, conscience and lawful rights of every person and community.
Dialogue
Open and peaceful communication, especially where differences or misunderstandings exist.
Cooperation
Working together on shared interests while respecting legitimate differences in faith and tradition.
A Platform for Peaceful Engagement
OMPALAN seeks to provide a credible platform through which religious leaders, traditional institutions, community representatives, government institutions, companies and other legitimate stakeholders can engage constructively on matters affecting producing and impacted communities.
Such engagement may include interfaith dialogue, peace education, community consultations, mediation support, joint community initiatives and public discussions that promote responsible citizenship and peaceful coexistence.
Shared Responsibility for Peace
Interfaith peace is not the responsibility of religious leaders alone. Families, youth, women, community leaders, public institutions, businesses, civil-society organisations and individual citizens all have a role to play in preventing violence, resisting religious hatred and building relationships across lines of difference.
Our differences in faith should not prevent our common commitment to peace, justice, human dignity and the wellbeing of our communities.
